Chesters Craig Farmhouse

Project: Chesters Craig Farmhouse
Location: Scottish Borders
Type: Extension and Internal Renovation

Chesters Craig Farmhouse is one of a number of robust vernacular dwellings surrounding the listed Ancrum Craig in the Scottish Borders. The existing house is to be upgraded, insulated and extended, using low-carbon energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

An extension is to be constructed against the south-west gable of the farmhouse to accommodate a new kitchen/dining space and utility room. Openings would be formed in the existing gable to allow access between the current living room and the new kitchen/dining space. The junction between old and new is to be glazed, allowing evening light to spill down the red sandstone of the existing gable. The entry sequence from the rear is to be reconfigured to accommodate a larger bathroom and study to opposing sides of the repositioned boot room.

The material palette reflects the robustness of the existing house without looking to mimic it. Locally sourced sandstone and larch are used externally, with pale CLT structure exposed inside the new kitchen.
